ABOUT US

How It All Began
Most people think the Steel Goat Marketplace is a nod to our beloved Steel City, especially when you see our bright black-and-gold logo. While we’ll never say no to a good “Burgh thing,” the truth is even better: our name came from actual steel goats.
If you’ve driven by our hillside on Rodi Road, you’ve probably seen the three glorious goats made entirely of steel, grazing proudly on our lawn. Sometimes they’re decked out with festive bows, funky hats, or even colorful ties. Originally, these goats were just a joke, a playful answer to our owner's wish for a real goat. But the community fell in love instantly. People smiled, laughed, and even begged to buy their own steel goats.
Naming Steel Goat Marketplace
When it came time to name our marketplace, nothing felt more fitting than honoring our steel grazers. They became local legends, just like the artisans and makers we dreamed of supporting. Plus, let's be honest, G.O.A.T. stands for "Greatest of All Time," and after visiting us, you’ll see why our vendors live up to the name.
We kept the fun rolling with silly goat antics like stringing Christmas lights, wearing glasses behind desks, and generally causing delightful mayhem. Around here, our goats, and our community, are full of surprises.
Growing a New Vision
Before we opened Steel Goat Marketplace, we started as Penn Hills Lawn and Garden. Then, we spent time listening to artists, crafters, and creative entrepreneurs who dreamed of having a brick-and-mortar shop but couldn't afford the high costs. With 12,000 square feet of space, we realized we could offer them a home inside our walls.
So we created Steel Goat Marketplace, a place where small businesses could thrive without breaking the bank. What started as a small corner of Penn Hills Lawn and Garden quickly took over the entire building, gobbling up the garden center the way only goats could. If you look closely at our logo, you’ll see a little branch and two leaves sticking out of our goat’s mouth, which is a playful nod to our roots.
Rooted in Our Community
Don’t worry, gardeners! We’re still true to our roots. Steel Goat Marketplace proudly works with “Garden with Jayme” to offer annuals, perennials, houseplants, herbs, vegetables, and expert horticulture advice. Gardening remains a huge part of who we are, even as our creative community continues to grow.
Steel Goat Marketplace is now more than a shopping destination for plants and crafts though. It's a hub for local creativity, connection, and good old-fashioned weirdness. What started with a few steel goats and a dream has blossomed into a vibrant community space!
